At Apto, we’re not just building hyperscale data centres – we’re helping shape the next phase of digital infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of cloud and AI infrastructure. We do this strategically, sustainably and at scale.
Our new video series lifts the lid on how we work: from strategy and site selection to design and delivery, from team culture to customer success.
We begin in Athens.
Athens: More than a new site. A strategic signal.
Our decision to develop a €300 million hyperscale campus in Athens marks a pivotal moment for Apto. Greece is emerging as digital infrastructure hub, supported by a forward-looking government agenda and significant renewable energy availability.
It’s a market where long-term growth potential and sustainability can go hand in hand – something we prioritise across all of our projects.
Mark Dolan, Chief Strategy and Acquisitions Officer at Apto:
“Announcing Athens not only signalled our arrival, but it also encapsulated our strategy of eking out opportunities in high potential and growth markets.”
Why Athens?
Our priorities—scalability, sustainability, and long-term strategy—are well aligned with the conditions we see in Greece. The country offers a favourable policy environment, growing digital demand, and infrastructure that can support modern hyperscale development.
Russell Poole, CEO of Apto:
“We’re at the very beginnings of what we think will be a very substantial market – and we’re already seeing significant customer interest.”
The Athens project reflects Apto’s ability to enter high potential markets with conviction, backed by strong internal expertise and experienced local partners.
A disciplined approach to site selection
Choosing a site for a hyperscale facility is inherently complex – and rightly so. The process demands technical rigour, multi-disciplinary input and long-term thinking.
In Athens, our decision was shaped by in-depth assessments of grid capacity, environmental impact, archaeological considerations, planning frameworks, demand projections and more. This level of diligence is fundamental to our strategy.
Hannah Kramer, Chief Legal Officer at Apto:
“The option in Athens was a culmination of numerous work streams. It illustrates Apto’s multi-disciplinary approach to site assessment and strategy.”
That approach has already delivered a fully permitted site, 80 MVA of power secured and a clear path to construction.
Design that meets tomorrow’s demands
Designing for flexibility is one of the industry’s biggest challenges, particularly when trying to balance current customer needs with emerging technologies. Our Athens campus is being developed with a structure that accommodates both.
From air cooled systems for lower density workloads to liquid cooling solutions capable of supporting direct-to-chip architecture, the facility will meet the demands of conventional cloud infrastructure and high density AI deployments alike.
Roger Gough, Director of Engineering at Apto:
“We have developed a building structure that caters for both lower-density and higher-density racks.”
Our team brings deep technical experience into the design process to ensure the campus supports customer requirements today, and won’t limit them tomorrow.
Facilitated by local knowledge
Delivering complex infrastructure requires deep local engagement. In Greece, we’re working with Dromeus Capital Group, whose long standing presence and investment experience give us an edge when navigating regulatory processes, utility access and local project execution.
As Russell notes:
“The most successful projects I’ve been involved in have always had strong local expertise.”
Our aim is to build with insight and intent, not just at speed.
Just the beginning
Athens is an important step in Apto’s journey, but it’s only one part of a broader strategy. With additional sites already in development, we’re applying the same principles – disciplined analysis, partnership-led delivery and a focus on customer requirements – to every project we undertake.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll share more behind the scenes: our approach to design and construction, and how we’re building a business and culture for the long term.
